Last night we grabbed a drink and a slice at our October Social hosted at the Balham Dynamo. ‘Past, Present & Pizza’ celebrated our heritage as – with memberships renewed – we looked forward to the new 2018/19 ‘season’.
We had some special guests, with past members joining us for the evening out. Attics were emptied and they presented us with some of the club’s memorabilia including a 104-year-old trophy, club newsletters going back to 1937, a jersey from the 60s and a BCC presidential sash. In turn we welcomed them to the new club with some honorary memberships. Food, drink and cycling chat all part of the evening.
For the uninitiated our most recent incarnation of the club began in 2017, morphing out of a family history project. The original BCC ran from 1897 to 1985 as a club. Some of those we welcomed were the sons and daughters of club members from the 50s and were members themselves in the 70’s. They actually rode out as BCC as late as 1997 and meet for an occasional ride today.
The members of the original club regaled us with tails of Balham in the 70s. Marshalling as kids, first rides out with Dads and some great socials, all in the context of the extended Balham CC cycling family.
Finally, we looked forward to the season ahead – Club Rides, Social Rides, a TT competition, a trip to Herne Hill Velodrome…hopefully out with the old guard!
